Professional dental hygiene & teeth cleanings, on the other hand, are able to clean the teeth not only above the gum line but also below the gum line as well. It is only through the cleaning of teeth above AND below the gum line that teeth are able to stay healthy and clean! Let Neighbourhood Dental provide the effective personal care you need, so you can maintain optimal oral health.

What Happens at a Dental Hygiene Appointment?

Any good dental treatment plan begins with a careful and complete examination by one of our dentists, which includes a detailed evaluation of your current oral health including your teeth, gums, and the surrounding tissue. We use digital x-rays, periodontal probing, and intraoral photography to determine the current state of your oral health. A dental hygiene appointment includes:

  • A complete periodontal assessment (including the removal of bacteria from beneath the gums)
  • Checking for any gum recession
  • Checking for the presence of gingivitis
  • Polishing your teeth to remove any surface stains
  • Scaling of your teeth, which removes tartar and bacteria from the surface of your teeth as well as beneath the gums. Depending on your scaling needs, it can be performed using traditional hand scaler instruments, a laser, or an ultrasonic device that uses super-fast vibrations to remove deposits.
  • Root Planing, to smooth the surfaces of the roots, which discourages further buildup of tartar and bacteria, and removes bacterial byproducts that add to inflammation and delay healing or reattachment of the gum to the tooth surfaces. Depending on your root planing needs, it can be performed using traditional hand scaler instruments, a laser, or an ultrasonic device that uses super-fast vibrations to remove deposits.
  • Antibiotics if a bacterial infection is found. Topical antibiotics can include antibiotics mouth rinse or insertion of gels containing antibiotics in the space between your teeth and gums or into pockets after deep cleaning. Oral antibiotics may be necessary to completely elimination infection-causing bacteria.
  • Fluoride treatment (if chosen) to help prevent cavities from frowning and harden enamel in areas that may be weak
  • An extra-oral exam at least once a year to check the head, neck, and jaw areas for confirmation of health
  • An intra-oral exam to check the gum tissues, tongue, and lips for confirmation of health
  • Digital x-rays (when needed)

You will also have an exam by one of our dentists, and you will have the chance to ask any questions you might have. We always encourage you to ask questions during your hygiene appointment so we can educate you about your oral health.

How Often Should I Have a Dental Hygiene Visit?

Dental Hygiene | Neighbourhood Dental | General & Family Dentist | Red Deer

How often you should visit Neighbourhood Dental for a hygiene appointment depends on several factors. If your teeth are susceptible to the excess accumulation of plaque and calculus, or you have crowded teeth, fillings, or missing teeth, this might lead to increased plaque buildup, which might require more frequent visits. At Neighborhood Dental, we understand that each patient will require a different and unique dental hygiene schedule, depending on their unique circumstances. While most people visit us for a dental hygiene appointment every 6 months, some patients might benefit from more frequent visits, while others might require less frequent hygiene appointments. Your Neighbourhood Dental dentist or dental hygienist will be happy to advise you how often you should have a dental cleaning based on your specific individual needs.
