Your Red Deer Choice for Botox

Botox® | Neighbourhood Dental | General & Family Dentist | Red Deer

As we age, repetitive movements of the facial muscles, along with the natural forces of gravity, can cause unwanted wrinkles and skin folds to develop on your face. At Neighbourhood Dental, we are pleased to offer non-invasive Botox treatment to help skin look younger and smoother.

What is Botox

Botox® | Neighbourhood Dental | General & Family Dentist | Red Deer

Botox (botulinum toxins) is an injection of drug that is made from a highly purified protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum that relaxes muscles. It does not affect the muscles themselves – it blocks the transmitters between the nerves that move the muscles so that the muscles cannot contract. It is often used for reducing wrinkles and restoring a more youthful appearance, but it can also be used in a non-surgical way to treat head aches and muscle tension associated with teeth grinding and TMD. When it is injected into the facial muscles, it prevents the muscles from contracting and helps them relax. Aesthetically, this can smooth skin and reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox can also work to help adjust your lip shape, sculpt your smile, and smooth wrinkles around your mouth. As a treatment for TMD/Bruxism, it relaxes muscles used to clench or grind, thereby lessening the resulting pain.

How does Botox work for TMD/Bruxism?

TMJ/TMD Therapy | Neighbourhood Dental | General & Family Dentist | Red Deer

A series of Botox injections into the muscles of the jaw can be a successful treatment option to alleviate symptoms of TMD. Your dentist will administer a series of targeted injections, which work to relax and/or weaken the muscles that are used when you clench or grind your teeth. The result is that you place less stress on your jaw, and the tension decreases. The positive effects of Botox can last many months and can even be permanent.

Benefits of Botox

  • Treatment is nonsurgical and noninvasive
  • Treatment can decrease pain and other TMD symptoms
  • There is no downtime involved with treatment
  • Injections do not interfere with normal mouth functions, like eating and talking
  • Results last several months and can even be permanent.
  • Can be used even if you do not have TMD, but still grind and clench your teeth. This can eliminate other issues caused by bruxism, like excessive wear on your teeth.

Why a Dentist is Qualified to Administer Botox for Cosmetic Purposes

  • Your dentist has specialized education and training in head and neck anatomy, on top of extensive hands-on training. This means that your dentist is familiar with the overall anatomy of the face and spends a great deal of time injecting anesthetics in many of the same areas treated with Botox.
  • Your dentist prioritizes proper lip to teeth ratio, how the smile will react, and how the teeth relate to the soft tissues surrounding the injected area.
  • Your dentist has experience with the anatomy and function of facial muscles, which is a valuable asset in the administration of Botox and other cosmetic injections.
