A dental bridge, also referred to as a fixed partial denture, is a dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by using abutment teeth as anchors for the restoration. A dental bridge is coloured and shaped exactly like your natural teeth, and essentially “bridges” the gap left behind by one or more missing teeth. A dental bridge is permanent and can eliminate the possibility of your remaining teeth shifting to fill the gap left behind by the missing teeth, thereby reducing the risk of bite difficulties, gum disease, and also maintaining proper speech.
The process begins by first conservatively reducing in size the abutment teeth, in order to accommodate the material that will be used to restore the missing tooth’s size and shape in correct alignment and contact with the opposing teeth.
Once teeth are prepared, an impression is taken and then sent off to a lab for processing. Your new dental bridge is usually complete within 1-2 weeks. To ensure protection and aesthetics, a temporary bridge is made in-office while your final bridge is being created. Once your bridge is completed and returned, your temporary bridge is removed, and the final bridge is permanently cemented into place.
